Peter Cranie visits Dogs Trust Merseyside

23 April 2014

Peter Cranie with Dog's Trust Merseyside rehoming manager, GeorginaLast week Peter Cranie, our lead European election candidate, visited Dogs Trust Merseyside. Peter has a keen interest in animal welfare, and wanted to visit the centre to get an understanding of the work Dogs Trust do and the impact that the European Union has on the charity’s work.

Peter met some of the dogs looking for their forever home, in particular Blue, a Ridgeback cross puppy, and Scooby, a German Shepherd Cross, just two of the dogs that Merseyside have had into the centre this year.

Peter says “I wanted to come to Dogs Trust Merseyside to offer my support to the centre and the charity.  My son and I have really enjoyed seeing such a wide variety of dogs and meeting the staff. I am very concerned that there is currently no legislation at a European level which protects the welfare of dogs.”

He continued: “To communicate our support for animal welfare, the Green Party has produced a ‘Manifesto on Animal Protection’ ahead of these important European elections. We support Dogs Trust’s call for an EU wide requirement for permanent animal identification and registration to an approved database, as well as EU legislation to licence dog and cat breeders.  If elected, I will continue to work with Dogs Trust to work in Europe for a better deal for animals.”

Aimee Best, Supporter Relations Officer at Dogs Trust says “It was great to welcome Peter to Dogs Trust and show him some the centre and some of our dogs who are looking for a home today. They were very excited to meet Peter and we hope that his visit will mean that they find a home soon.”
