Green Party members in Manchester have selected Jess Mayo as their candidate in the upcoming Manchester Gorton by-election. Jess, who is 36 and lives in Trafford, previously stood for the Green Party in the Wythenshawe and Sale East constituency in the 2015 General Election.
Gorton was one of three constituencies in the North of England where the Green Party came second in 2015, gaining nearly 10% of the vote. In the more recent City Council elections (last year), the Greens gained 14% of the vote, well ahead of all other Parties besides Labour.
At the launch of her campaign today, Jess said:
"The Greens are the only party to challenge Labour in Gorton and it’s a privilege to stand in this by-election and give voters a real alternative.
"The Green Party has already brought about real change for this community by pushing the council to protect us from flooding and make our roads safer."
Jess was joined by Green Party Co-Leader Caroline Lucas MP, and Greater Mancheater Mayoral Candidate Will Patterson.
