Deyika Nzeribe, Greater Manchester's Green Mayoral Candidate this weekend joined Oldham and Saddleworth Green Party at the innovative Saddleworth Community hydro-electric turbine house at Dove Stone Reservoir.
The Green scheme uses the millions of litres of water that are released from the reservoir daily to maintain the river. With millions of tonnes of water behind it and falling 35 metres, this water is being diverted to flow through the turbine house. The energy extracted is used to generate electricity, supplied to and distributed via the National Grid.
Deyika said “This is a fantastic achievement of a community coming together and creatively thinking about producing sustainable sources of energy. These kind of initiatives are exactly what the Mayor of Greater Manchester should support."
