#IAmTinaRothery: North West Greens support anti-fracking campaigner

7 July 2016

The North West Green Party has spoken out in support of anti-fracking protester Tina Rothery, who faces jail after being threatened with £55,000 of legal fees by fracking firm Cuadrilla.

Tina has been dubbed a ‘modern-day Spartacus’ after becoming the subject of an international ‘I Am Tina Rothery’ campaign, appeared in court last month refusing to pay the costs brought against her, following on from her non-violent direct action with many others against Cuadrilla’s preparation for fracking in the Fylde.

The resolution passed by the North West Green Party at its recent meeting in Preston reads:

"The North West Green Party expresses its unwavering support and admiration for Tina Rothery and her unerring stance against the fracking industry.

"The Party has been enriched by having a member of the calibre of Tina. Her ethics, campainging, enthusiasm and vision for a better, greener future for us all continues to be an inspiration for many.

"We support her moral stance against the shortsighted dogmatism of this government, where they put transitory gain for the few in place of the common good. We therefore support her refusal to accede to the demand for costs in her current legal action."

Green Party of England and Wales Leader, Natalie Bennett, has added her support:

“Fracking is a threat to our communities and our futures. Tina's action, with that of the other 'Nanas', is a brave stand in protection of their communities. Fracking companies that try to victimise and target individuals to prevent opposition are only going to find they are faced with an even stronger reaction.

“Anti-fracking protesters in Lancashire and across the country deserve praise for their actions, not legal proceedings. The Green Party will be behind Tina every step of the way.”
