Local Green Parties Create Liverpool City Region Forum

25 January 2016

A Liverpool City Region Green Parties Forum has been formed to ensure that Green views are properly represented across the newly devolved City Region as it develops.

The City region includes the City of Liverpool, plus the boroughs of Wirral, Sefton, Knowsley, St Helens and Halton.

Cllr Lawrence Brown of Liverpool GP, who chaired the initial meeting, stated the importance of developing a regional identity for the Green Party 'We have grave doubts about the way that devolution decisions have been taken but this shouldn't prevent us from putting forward Green proposals on the major regional issues'.

Green Party councillors in Liverpool and Wirral voted against the devolution deal on the basis that it was largely agreed behind closed doors, with minimal public consultation and with no effective controls proposed over the position of Metro Mayor.

"Throughout the main conurbations in England, devolution deals which will shape the future governance arrangements in the country are being agreed by a small number of politicians . The Green Party needs to engage with this process to ensure that public involvement and confidence is increased and there are effective checks and balances in place to control powerful Mayoral positions." added Cllr Brown.
