Manchester Evening News letter

16 November 2013

Dear Sir

I was shocked, but sadly not surprised, to hear that 10,000 repossession orders have been granted across Greater Manchester in the last year. With the cost of living rising, wages remaining the same or falling and the government's pernicious reform of welfare benefits people are really struggling to keep a roof over their heads.

As your article made clear, the poorest in society - those who are in social housing - have had to suffer the majority of these repossessions. Behind the statistics lie the stories of homeless families struggling to cope with the upset of losing their home and the charities or local councils who have to shoulder the costs of providing them with temporary housing while they wait for a new home to become available.

Many more people are now living week to week with fear and uncertainty over whether they too will lose their homes. As the sixth richest country in the world surely we can ensure that people have enough to meet their basic needs, including housing? The Green Party believes that with the introduction of a living wage and a fairer tax system which ensures that multinational companies pay their fair share, everyone should be able to afford to cover the basic costs of living.

Yours sincerely,

Peter Cranie
