Only Greens score 100% for honesty and transparency
18 November 2008
David Cameron has expelled Den Dover, the North-West MEP and Conservative Party’s former chief whip in the European parliament after the Strasbourg authorities ruled that he had breached its rules and demanded that he pay back just over £500,000.
This is just the latest in a long series of financial scandals involving the main UK Parties (and UKIP). In terms of transparency about expenses, staff and income from Europe, only the Green Party Euro MPs scored 100% in terms of honesty and transparency in the report commissioned by “Open Europe” an independent think tank. UKIP scored just 50%, with Labour, the Lib Dems and Conservatives doing even worse with just 11%, 27% and 36% respectively.
Peter Cranie, the leading North West MEP candidate for the Green Party said
"Not only do the Green Party have the best answers for the growing
environmental and economic crises, we bring a reputation for fairness,
hard work and honesty. Our current MEPs Caroline Lucas and Jean Lambert
have both won awards for their achievements in Europe over the past
nine years; we need more Green MEPs working with them to secure the
best future for us and our children."
(Incidentally, the Tories can count themselves fortunate that even without Mr Dover they still have the same number of MEPs in the North-West that they did one year ago; for that they can thank the defection of one of the two Liberal Democrat MEPs, Sajid Karim, late last year. )
