Opposition to Manchester Airport road extension to A6
06 December 2008
Greens from Stockport, Manchester and East Cheshire are combining to oppose the building of the A555 bypass between Manchester Airport and the A6. This is in contrast to local politicians from all 3 'grey' Parties, who have been unanimous in welcoming the £165 million grant from
Secretary of State for Transport, Geoff Hoon, to build the road.
Janet Cuff of Stockport Green Party said "Somehow, they seem to have forgotten that the Government is committed to
reducing greenhouse gas emissions, which make a substantial contribution towards
climate change. This new road will lead to an overall increase in road traffic
and hence, to greenhouse gas emissions, as new roads always do."
John Knight of East Cheshire Green Party added "There are already excellent transport connections from Buxton via the central High Peak, Disley, High Lane & Hazel Grove to the airport. To argue, as Labour MP Ann Coffey does, that the bypass would relieve congestion on the A6 doesn’t hold water – I lived most of my life in Stockport, and still have strong links to the town; only a very small proportion of traffic on the A6 is bound for the airport: most is either local traffic, heading for the town centre or Manchester, or otherwise en route for the M60."
The Greens state that the Government should instead spend the money on improving capacity on our overcrowded local rail system or direct it towards a Metrolink for Stockport.
