Former Lib Dem councillor in Kendal endorses Peter Cranie for European elections

20 May 2014

Cllr Rob Boden, a former Liberal Democrat councillor from Kendal, has endorsed the North West Green Party's lead European election candidate, Peter Cranie, as the most positive vote for the European Elections.

Cllr Boden, who now sits as an independent on South Lakeland District Council, said his decision to leave the Lib Dems was because he had been made “politically homeless” by their policies in government [1].

North West Green Party's European elections candidate,Peter Cranie, reacting to the endorsement said:

“Greens believe that we need action to reduce the growing inequality in our society, investment in public transport and renewable energy and a serious plan to address climate change - not austerity cuts, which hit the poorest in our society the hardest, and fracking for shale gas."

“On the gagging bill, tuition fees, Trident, the selling of care data, secret US-EU trade deals and many other issues Lib Dem voters are feeling let down. I therefore welcome Rob’s endorsement and urge other former and current Lib Dems to switch to the Greens.”

The announcement follows today's national poll by YouGov that puts the Greens on 12%, which is 2% ahead of the Liberal Democrats. In the regional breakdown for the “North”, the Greens pull further ahead on 14%, showing they are on target to secure their first Euro MP in the region.

Peter Cranie added:

“For the first time ever we're standing more candidates than the Liberal Democrats in Cumbria. There is a positive alternative to the coalition parties. In the European elections, which use a proportional representation system, all Green votes will count and we can elect Green Euro MPs. We were just 0.3% away from a seat last time and if the polls are right, we will win a seat on Thursday.”
